free lunch

Last year, a friend of a friend of mine created a ministry called "Free Lunch." He and a group of his friends would pack sack lunches and go pass them out to the homeless and hungry of downtown KC. My friend and I went with him once and it was so amazing to watch people be nourished; both by food and by this unexpected kindness. We stopped at a job site, where many Hispanic men waited all day in hopes of getting a call for work. We stopped many people on the street, in parks, huddled in bus stops without coats. It was cold out, and as we drove around, the regulars told us some of their close calls with violent people or drug addicts. We gave all our extra lunches to a homeless shelter. After our work, Jason (the creator) asked me to design a logo for Free Lunch. (above)

I'm not sure if Free Lunch is still in operation, but I was (and still am) inspired by this man's courage and creativity. I so long to have a heart that responds to the needs I see with active help, not with overwhelmedness, paralyzation, or apathy. I feel so blessed to have been a part of it in some small way.
